The purpose of this letter is to inform you of some basic points in
planning and writing a scholastic paper. I’d like to start with the first step
as follows.
First of all, you are to find a good research topic. An innovative
argument or an inspirational direcation will make your next jobs easier and
much more productive. It won’t pay off if you carry out an extensive research
program only to find that your argument (or thesis statement)is shaky and
self-contradictory. Therefore, you should ensure that your topic is not a
cliche or simply childish. To avoid such an embarrassing result, you’d better
figure out a general research field, such as “aesthetic comparison between
Wagner and Bizet”. Then, you set out to collect reviews and papers on the
similar topic and read them out. By doing so, you are expected to form a new
perspective in your mind on the half way. Don’t rush to narrow down your
topic. Just let your ideas float and grow by themselves. It is worthwhile to
spend a bit more time in thinking and thereby reaping a good point exclusively
belonging to you.
When you know what you are going to argue, it’s the right time to
materialize your paper. And I propose some tips here: 1) Don’t believe you
can write a book for the first try in the research world. The reasonable
length of your paper is about 5000 words. You are unable to explore a huge
topic within 5000 words, unless you want to screw it up. The best and safest
policy is to focus on a very detailed point and elaborate with it. 2) Don’t
forget that an appropriate number of well-established qutoes from some
classic works is a must. It will make your paper look scholarly and
persuasive. I know it is hypocritical to pretend that your paper is academic,
but it is by no means unnecessary. 3) You must stick to the form of
academic papers, by which I mean the format of reference, abstract,
or quotation. For most papers, an executive editor just has a very faint idea
of what you are saying. What they are really concerned about is
no more than the FORM.
What’s more, you should keep in mind that most readers (including those
editors or professors) are easy to run out of patience. The only way to extend
their limited attention span is to make your paper look “readable“. A
thrilling title, some exotic jargons, conspicuous subtitles, and a brief
preface stressed by an corresponding ending might help you in some way.
To sum up, it is not easy to do serious researches in liberal arts. You
should flip through a great multitude of related reference books and think
a lot. Don’t write a paper for publishing a paper. It is utmost enjoyable to
flirt with the wisest thoughts ever in history. The process of making your
way through them is lonely but mind-expanding. Paper work is no more than a
sort of expression of your reflections upon your spiritual hiking.
