Test 189 Objectives
Section 1 - System Recovery
Use LED output to isolate boot failure problems (e.g. 223-229,
551, etc.)
Access rootvg in maintenance mode using boot media to repair or
restore filesystem (fsck,
missing files)
Determine whether hang is resource vs OS hang
Use crash LEDs to determine if crash is likely to be due to
hardware or software
Examine errlog entries
Section 2 - Disk Management
Answer questions from clients on how to create or remove drives
Answer questions from clients on how to create/extend or remove
paging space
Answer questions from clients on how to migrate data from on PV
to another
Perform storage management activities (disk stripping, multiple
jfs log devices, etc.)
Troubleshoot file system errors (identify missing file space,
check order of mounting,
fsck, etc.)
Troubleshoot disk error (after improper removal, identify missing
physical volume,
synchlvodm, etc.)
Section 3 - Devices
Answer questions from clients on how to add, delete and/or modify
devices
Answer questions from clients on how to configure network devices
(SSA loops, SCSI
devices, modems, PPP communications, ttys, Async Controllers,
etc.)
Troubleshoot problems related to configuring network devices
Troubleshoot xwindows error "unable to open display"
Troubleshoot print problems
Section 4 - Performance
Troubleshoot performance problems based on system configuration
Use vmstat command to identify CPU, RAM and paging bottlenecks
Use iostat command to identify I/O bottlenecks
Use netstat command to identify network bottlenecks
Correct CPU, RAM and paging shortages
Correct network bottlenecks
Optimize disk resources
Section 5 - Networking
Troubleshoot when there is a problem communicating to other
machines on the network
Troubleshoot hostname problems (e.g. not expected value, does not
match intercate, etc.)
Troubleshoot when system is not forwarding packets
Setup default route and routing strategy when network traffic is
not reaching destination
Troubleshoot when interface has proper IP address but cannot ping
another host
Check/set tcp tunables for network performance
Troubleshoot inability to telnet or rlogin to machine
Use different network troubleshooting commands to determine why
client cannot telnet
beyond default gateway
Debug problems when trying to ping/telnet/rsh to other systems
Add and remove interface (ifconfig, detach, rmdev, etc.)
Section 6 - System Configuration & Management
Analyze simple scripts to determine output
Check critical system scripts and what they start/control (e.g.
/etc/rc, /etc/rc.net,
importvg, etc.)
Check for possible exposure in system access files (e.g.
hosts.equiv, .rhosts, netrc,
forward, etc.)
Check for suspect activity on system
Add entries to crontab to run at specific times
Check existence of cron and at job files
Use flags for listing, editing and deleting crontabs (crontabl
-1, crontab -e, etc.)
Set/change environment variables
Use common "vi" manipulation subcommands to edit ksh script
Use commands for viewing different file types (ascii = cat, view,
more pg: binary=strings,
etc.)
Section 7 - Backup & Restore
Explain usage and limitation of various backup methods to the
customer (e.g. backup,
mksysb , tar, CPIO, remote backup, etc.)
Verify backup is successful
Troubleshoot backup failures
Instruct customer on how to restore
Section 8 - Install & NIM
Answer questions from clients regarding when to use migrate and
when to preserve install
Locate and analyze installp log files
Navigate through smit menus to perform different installs
Check and verify system installation integrity (lppchk, lslpp,
oslevel, etc.)
Check client definition and use debug tools (e.g. bootb, tftp,
iptrace, traceroute, etc.)
Initiate and capture nimboot debug (e.g. create devig boot image)
