Rapid Tooling System
The ProMetal� rapid tooling system (photo) creates a solid object by
printing a sequence of two-dimensional layers. Each layer is built by
spreading a thin layer of powder material. The powder is then selectively
joined together by ink-jet printing material. The powder bed is lowered at
the completion of each layer and a powder is spread. ProMetal creates tooling
directly from a computer in five steps: (1) a polymeric binder is printed into
stainless or tool steel powder (this step defines a green part within the
powder bed); (2) the loose powder is removed, thereby revealing the green
part; (3) the polymeric binder is burned out in a furnace and the part is
lightly sintered; (4) the part is infiltrated with a copper alloy in a
second furnace operation (at this point, the part is fully dense); and (5)
the tooling is polished or machined (if necessary). For more information,
