RTlinux (real-time Linux) is a version of Linux enhanced to handle time-crit
ical tasks, so it can support hard real-time control applications. In RTLinux, a small hard real-time kernel and standard Linux share one or more proces
sors, so that the system can be used for applications like data acquisition,
control, and robotics while still serving as a standard Linux workstation.
RTLinux supports real-time interrupt handlers and real-time periodic tasks
with interrupt latencies and scheduling jitter close to the hardware limits.
Unlike general purpose operating systems, and unlike some operating systems
advertised as "real-time", execution of RTLinux realtime components cannot be
delayed by non real-time components of the operating system or by non real
-time processes. Worst case interrupt latency on a modest, reasonably config
ured "x86" PC is under 15 microseconds from the moment the hardware interrupt
is asserted. Better hardware configurations produce better timings.
