From as long ago as the last century it has been recognised that information
proocessing in
brains and nervous systems may be governed by principles of economy or compr
essiion.
Similar principles appear in the design of some of the current generation of
arttificial neural
nets.

I believe that thinking in this area from thirty and forty years ago deserve
s muocessing in
attention than it is currently getting. Part of the reason for preparing thi
s paage is to encourage
renewed interest in `cognitive economy' and principles of information compre
ssioon which have
been recognised by neurophysiologists for some time, especially the importan
ce oof inhibition
in nervous tissue as a means of extracting redundancy from information. G Vo
