About Triggers
The primary method of adding code to a form is through triggers. A trigger is a block of
PL/SQL code that you attach to a specific object, and that executes in response to a specific
event. For example, to create a command button, you would draw the button on a form, and
then attach a When-Button-Pressed trigger that executes the desired command code. As its
name suggests, the When-Button-Pressed trigger executes, or fires, whenever the button is
pressed.
Oracle Forms provides a rich variety of events that you can respond to with triggers. Along
with standard interface events such as mouse clicks in a button or check box, Oracle Forms
also externalizes a variety of internal processing events. For example, a When-Validate-Item
trigger fires when Oracle Forms validates the value in a text item. By default, validation
happens according to a well-defined set of event rules. Once you understand these rules,
that is, the Oracle Forms event model, you can write triggers to control virtually any aspect of
your application's behavior.
