Sun details plans for Web-based rival to Microsoft .Net
By LEE COPELAND GLADWIN
(February 06, 2001) SAN FRANCISCO -- If imitation remains the sincerest form
of flattery, then Sun Microsystems Inc. paid Microsoft Corp. a big complime
nt yesterday.
At an event here, Sun announced a Web computing services strategy that's des
igned to compete with the Internet-based .Net initiative that Microsoft laun
ched last spring. Called Sun Open Net Environment (ONE), Sun's plan is compo
sed of a technology infrastructure that's culled from the company's Forte de
velopment tools and the iPlanet server packages that were developed through
an alliance with Netscape Communications Corp.
Scott McNealy, Sun's chairman and CEO, said yesterday that Sun ONE would pav
e the way for development of smart Web services that would run on a variety
of computing -- from PCs to handheld pagers and cellular phones and even com
munication systems built into cars. That's a similar goal to what Microsoft
has in mind with .Net.
The Sun ONE infrastructure is scheduled to be delivered in pieces during the
next two years, according to McNealy and other Sun officials. The plan incl
udes five new e-commerce applications built by iPlanet and a service deploym
ent engine that supports XML and other Internet protocols.
Sun also introduced a developer's release of its Webtop technology, a person
al productivity tool that the company said will let software programmers man
ipulate data components via a Web browser. In addition, it said 40 independe
nt software vendors and technology partners have signed up to support and im
plement the Sun ONE technology.
