hi.
I'm setting a samba fileserver on Red Hat Linux 6.0. Accdg. to the setup,
Sambais already configured and is ready for use. But I can't find the samb
a serverin a windows 95 box.
Do hostnames and domain needed to be the same with those in win 95 boxes?
How will I get users from win95 access shared directory?
Please tell me what to do next.

Or you can just add
smbmount //corona/myhome /mnt/samba/myhome -U xxxxx%yyyyy
to one of your rc (e.g. rc.local) scripts :>>

Hi all together,
all answers to my first posting didn't help to solve my
problem.
Maybe this can help you.
When I'm doing: smbclient -L MYLINUX -U MYUSER
I get the following message:

And that's what in log.smb:

I'm using Samba 2.0.5a on SuSE Linux 6.0 (Kernel 2.0.36). MYLINUX

I get back the list of shares on MYWINNT. MYUSER is a Linux user
and is in /etc/smbpasswd.
As far as I know gid 65534 belongs to "nobody", so MYUSER is not
envolved yet.
Thanks in advance...

Well, to find out what stuff is passed on I use sometimes the next line, wh
ich you can addin the smb.conf to your [HP-5N-Market] entry:
root preexec = echo "U-%U G-%G M-%M I-%I m-%m a-%a t-%T h-%H p-%P s-%S u-
%u g-%g" >>/tmp/prexec.log
actually you can just also run a script in which you just grab whatever you
like to knowis going on, like 'id', 'pwd' etc.
root preexec = /usr/local/samba/scripts/preinfo.ksh [ <parameters> ]
(if you like, of course you can add parameters, like %U %I %m)
I hope this is what you mean?

Hi,
I am running Mandrake and samba
But when I try to login from a NT workstation to samba, the login fails...
This is because samba checks my user name with the name that I am logged in
in Win NT and not the name that I entered in the netwerk connection box
(With passwd)
What am I doing wrong ?

Which one do you want to win? By the look of
your smb.conf, I'm assuming you NT box is a PDC.
Therefore it should bethe domain master (and really
the local master for its subnet as well).

Hi,
I actually would like to backup a NT share into a tree on a Solaris
machine, with...
smbtar <options> -t - | tar xf -
But this always results in an error after a bunch of files has been
retrieved, with the following error message:
tar: directory checksum error
smbtar'ing to a tar file (-t fie.tar) works fine, but since I want only
the files to be backuped since the last backup this becomes more of a
hassle (yeah I could 'tar xvf' the new tar file after completion, but
that seems like such an overhead).
Experimenting with block(size) just moved the occurance of the error.
Actually one would expect to be able to :
smbtar <options> -B -t - | tar xBf -
Which usually with reular tar is used to copy filesystems....
Running Samba 1.19.18p10
Anyone has a heads up on this?
Much obliged,
Frans

You can find out your lprm command like this:
testparm | grep -i lprm
To verify that testparm is being accurate, you can hardcode that into your
smb.conf like this:
lprm command = cancel %p-%j
Then, to insert a testpoint to determine the effective user, do this:
lprm command = echo "U=%U, G=%G, u=%u, g=%g" > lprmtest.txt
Start a big print job from Windows, then cancel it. I believe that should
do it.

Hello,
I ditched trying to compile Samba and went out and got the binaries at the
SGI freeware site. That solved one problem, now I am mired in WINS and/or
NetBIOS problems. I stepped through DIAGNOSIS.txt, and when I get to test
8. I get the "Network Name Not Found" error. Fine. So I checked the
log.nmb at log level 3 to see what the heck is going on, and here is what I
found (I left out the IP addresses for whatever nebulous paranoid reasons):

You probably need to read some more in the SAMBA Howto; ultimately
that's quicker than looking for answers to "newbie" questions here.
(Yes, I am a comparative newbie also).
However, the first thing you might do is make sure the workgroup setting
in smb.conf matches the ones for your Win95 boxes.

First of all I have been very remis in updating the SGI freeware site
version of samba, I believe it is still at 1.9.18p10. I would suggest
you get a copy from the samba mirrors or from
http://reality.sgi.com/samba
These are versions 2.0.5a that I compiled and packaged.
What are the settings in your smb.conf concerning wins? Are you using
samba as the WINS server or are you pointing to an NT WINS server?

One of the benefits of living in Silicon Valley is the
SVLUG Linux users group. You meet the most interesting
people there :-).
I met someone from Rational software who has the ability
to contact the product manager for Clearcase. I told him about
the number of Clearcase customers who would like Rational to
support Clearcase running against a Samba fileserver (as
they've asked the Samba Team many times over the years if
we can make this work :-).
He proposed that I send him a list of such customers
and he will try and advocate Rational working with
the Samba Team to validate a particular Samba release
with Clearcase.
So I'm asking for people who are running Clearcase with
Samba, or would like to do so, to send me your details
so I can forward them on.
Please note as I'm trying to get a business justification
done here, you should be an existing Clearcase customer,
and extra reasons why it makes sense for your business
to use Clearcase with Samba wouldn't hurt either :-).
Please send responses directly to me and I'll send them
on.
Thanks,
Jeremy Allison,
Samba Team.

Hi all,
FYI: I got the auto location of domain controllers
with security = domain coded up, working and tested and will
be putting it into the 2.0.6 release. To use it just change
the password server= line to be :
password server = *
Someone (I can't remember who) was requiring this functionality....
Cheers,
Jeremy Allison,
Samba Team.

That's great.
On a close issue, I'm running into problems with trust in 2.0.5a? Is that
a known issue? I explicitly set "allow trusted domains = yes" and the
trusted domain doesn't have access. Is there something I should look for?
Also, we are on a 32node subnet (snm: 255.255.255.224) and we have a weird
symptom, where this machine on the second domain (now using "net use" to
identify themselves as a regular domain as the trust didn't work) doesn't
see anything on the drives if the internet connection goes down. The
machine can add files, but doesn't see anything listed in the shares
The log for that machine spits out a lot of :
[1999/10/05 15:43:07, 0] smbd/dir.c:dptr_create(453)
dptr_create: returned 0: Error - all new dirptrs in use ?
The domain members are fine... We are moving to a full c-class, and away
from garbage microsoft dhcp, so perhaps this symptom will disappear.
Thanks for the great work,
kenneth

Hi there,
could anybody out there make a statement to when the new samba version
is gonig to be released???
I do need it pretty urgently because of a file locking problem on a
glibc 2.1 system...
and I do need to know whether it's going to be out soon or I'll have to
wait some - which would mean having to install another system in the
meantime....
Bye, Jan

smbmount'ed fs "dies" after a short time

I have a linux (RH6) client that smbmounts a filesystem
from an NT server. After some short unspecified period
of time, all attempts to access the mounted filesystem
on the linux box result in "Input/Output Error".
I can't even smbumount the file system (same error
message). The NT system continues to function, and
other MS clients (Win95 and NT) do not have any problems
with the filesystem (i.e. everything else continues working
normally). Samba version according to RPM is samba-2.0.5a-1.
Interestingly, rebooting the linux system DOES NOT solve
the problem. Any attempt to reference the mount point,
even after the reboot, gets the same "Input/Output" error.
To correct the problem I have to do the following on the
linux box:
1) shutdown to single-user mode
2) rmdir the mount point
3) reboot
Can anyone help me get smbmount-mounted file systems
to be more stable?
TIA,
Jim Garrison
