BREAKING NEWS
Friday May 8, 1998
Corel Ports to Linux and goes Open Source!
Corel Corporation and Corel Computer have made major announcements
regarding their commitment to Linux and Open Source software.
Corel will port their major commercial software applications to Linux,
while Corel Computer will open the Linux-based source code for their
Network Computer, the NetWinder NC.
According to Corel partner Software Development Corporation,
WordPerfect 8 for Linux will be available in several languages beginning
in July, 1998. SD Corporation also says to expect an aggressive pricing
structure for this and other products, perhaps even lower than the $99
announced by Corel -- welcome news to Linux users.
Of course, everyone wants to know about the remainder of the Corel
Office Suite, as well as other Corel applications like Draw and Ventura.
SD Corporation has assured us that the other applications will be
ported, but they are not sure of a time frame for delivery. SD Corporation
asks for our patience and support as they engage in the complex process of
porting the software. Corel is committed to making each piece of Linux
software at least as full-featured and stable as its MS Windows counterpart.
Such an undertaking will naturally take time.
So, in light of the major Corel Announcements of May 7th, and our
conversations with Corel and Software Development Corporation, we encourage
the Linux community to take the following steps:
1) Most of all, let's be patient. Yes, Corel's announcement is huge, but
porting their software to Linux is far more complex than simply recompiling.
We will see their major products on Linux, but it cannot happen over night.
2) Recognize that Corel has decided to take a major stake in the future
success of Linux as an O/S. They are committed to the success of Linux, and
should be duly recognized. They ask that we give their products a try, and
buy if we like them. They have taken a risk on Linux and the Linux community,
one that will hopefully pay off for them -- and us -- in the long run.
3) Give them rational, well thought out feedback on their products.
SD Corporation has informed us that they appreciate the feedback we as a
community have given them regarding WordPerfect 7; we should keep up the
good work. They will make it easier for us by providing demo software for
testing/evaluation prior to the actual purchase of a license.
Linux Resources will be following this story closely and keeping up with
developments as they happen. Please check back often for further information.
We hope to have more details about anticipated release dates as soon as they
are available.

Corel Computer Corp. announces the release of its Linux based source
code for the NetWinder™ family of network computers.
What is Corel Computer announcing?
Corel Computer is publicly supporting Open-Source Software. Corel Computer
is taking a leading role in the promotion of open standards, network computing
and the cooperative software development model by announcing it will make
available the source code to the Linux portion of its NetWinder™ operating system.
Over the past months, Corel Computer has invested significant engineering effort
in porting Linux to the StrongARM microprocessor. Corel Computer, under the General
Public License, will be returning its development work to the Linux community.
In addition, Corel Computer will gather and organize the porting of the
applications and the tools necessary to create an integrated development
environment (IDE) for its NetWinder. Concurrently, Corel Computer will open
source the platform specific drivers designed for the NetWinder. All code will
be available for peer review and evaluation in the near future.
Why is this important?
Corel Computer views this announcement as a beginning of a significant
partnership with the Linux and Open Source communities. These
communities include members who are Linux advocates and developers as
well as corporate members such as Netscape Communications Corp.,
Caldera Inc., Red Hat Software, Cygnus Solutions, Digital Equipment Corp.,
Software AG and Pick Systems. Corel Computer intends to help
Open-Source Software move rapidly into the mainstream through further
promotion and development.
By distributing the Linux portion of the NetWinder, Corel Computer will
generate interest amongst developers who wish to extend the software in
ways that fall outside Corel Computer's business plan. Developers may
explore the potential of the Linux and NetWinder combination by adding
enhancements to complete their own projects quickly. This rapid and
cooperative development model will help further open standards and the
Open-Source Software model.
The products that Corel Computer is committed to providing offer superior
value and are highly compatible. Corporations are choosing Open-Source
Software because it enables the customization of products to fit specific
needs. By selecting Linux, and committing to Open-Source Software, Corel
Computer is providing cost-effective, value-added alternatives to its
customers.
When will Corel Computer make the source available?
Corel Computer is working with the Ottawa Carleton Linux Users Group
(OCLUG) and consulting closely with industry partners on the final details of
the release of the NetWinder code. Developers can expect to be able to
review the first StrongARM-Linux port in the coming weeks.

Who is Corel Computer?
Corel Computer, a subsidiary of Corel Corporation, an
award-winning software developer, is designing network computing and
communications hardware and software. The company has a unique
position in the market because it is designing hardware as well as
software for thin client products. To date, Corel Computer
has designed a powerful yet small thin client; ported the Linux
operating system to this StrongARM based platform; ported a special
Java Virtual Machine and Just-In-Time compiler to the platform; and
created a unique Webtop, including a full set of accessories entirely
in Java. Ownership of each of these components allows Corel Computer
a vantage point unmatched by any other thin client vendor.
Corel Computer Corp. is a vendor of high quality videoconferencing and
network computing products. CorelVIDEO™ is a set of reliable, scalable

Robert Young, President, Red Hat Software Comments
"The entrance of a leading commercial hardware vendor, such
as Corel Computer, into the Linux model of cooperative development
and open code is highly significant. Corel Computer's decision to
select Linux for its network computer was based on solid
technical reasons: robust, reliable, innovative operating
system they could quickly port to their unique platform. The decision
to open this code and support the model is based on solid business
reasons: faster development, more reliable offerings and a closer
relationship with their customers. Red Hat is enthusiastic about the
entrance of Corel Computer to the Linux software development community."
