Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, b. Palestrina, near Rome, c.1525, d. Rome,
Feb. 2, 1594, was an illustrious Italian composer of Roman Catholic church
music. He was a choirboy at Santa Maria Maggiore at the age of 12, returning
from Rome to his native town in 1544 as organist and singer in the cathedral.
He married in 1547 and had three sons, but his family had all died by 1580.
Subsequently, he considered the priesthood, but instead he married the widow
of a wealthy merchant. Palestrina's musical career kept him in a predominan-
tly Roman orbit in which he enjoyed the grace and favor of popes and cardin-
als together with the artistic collaboration of choirs of high caliber. In
such an ambiance his genius flourished and developed, so that before he was
30 he had published his first book of masses (1554), dedicated to Pope Juli-
us III. Director of the Julian Chapel Choir from 1551 until 1555, he became
a singer in the pontifical choir in the latter year and began to compose for
the papal chapel. The accession of Pope Paul IV saw a return to stricter di-
scipline in choral appointments, and Palestrina, as a married man, was obli-
ged to leave his post. From 1555 until 1560 he was in charge of the choir at
Saint John Lateran, moving in 1561 to Santa Maria Maggiore and holding simu-
ltaneously other musical positions. Although he received invitations to ser-
ve the emperor Maximilian II and Guglielmo Duke of Mantua, Palestrina remai-
ned in Rome, eventually returning (1571) to the Julian Chapel as director of
music.

Palestrina's works, available in two complete editions, are exclusively vocal an
d almost totally liturgical, the only exceptions being a solitary book of
madrigals and a collection of spiritual madrigals. He wrote 105 masses (for
four to eight voices) most of which are of the "parody" type--that is, they
take their starting point from compositions of his own or of other composers. Ma
ny masses are based on plainsong tenors, while nine make use of alternating chan
t and polyphony. More than 250 of his motets are extant, few being based
on plainsong tenors although the chant is sometimes paraphrased within the o-
verall texture. Illustrative musical touches are found in the 29 motets based on
 the Song of Solomon. There are also 68 offertories, 13 complete sets of L-
amentations, 12 litanies, 20 psalms, and 35 magnificats. Palestrina's tremen-
dous output, like that of Bach in a later age, never fell below a remarkably
high level of musical accomplishment.
