In praise of feeling bad about yourself

The buzzard never says it is to blame.
The panther wouldn’t know what scruple mean.
When the piranha strikes, it feels no shame.
If snakes had hands, they’d claim their hands were clean.
A jackal doesn’t understand remorse.
Lions and lice don’t waver in their course.
Why should they, when they know they’re right?
Though hearts of killer whales may weigh a ton,
In every other way they’re light.
On this third planet of the sun
Among the signs of bestiality
A clear conscience is Number One

恶鹰从不说自己不好。
猎豹也不晓得良知的意义。
虎鱼攻击时，从不觉得害臊。
毒蛇若有手，准说它的手干净无比。
豺狼不会理解悔恨的滋味。
狮与虱偷袭时绝不畏首畏尾。
既然认定自己没错，它们何必动摇？
逆戟鲸的心重不可量，
可换个角度怎么看都轻于鸿毛。
在太阳系这第三个行星上
处处是兽性的标志
保持澄澈的良心最该颂扬。
