After school on the same day, I accompanied Shia to her home. She kept 
comforting me all the way. But when I left her home, my fury was still rising. 
As I had not been criticized since I was born, how could I remain indifferent
as if nothing had happened? So fast I rode my bicycle that, when a little 
boy suddenly ran into my direction, I didn't have the time to stop my bicycle.
I had to abruptly turned the handlebars. The little boy was saved, but I, 
with my bicycle, fell into the irrigation canal along the road. I was sent to
hospital immediately and my bicycle, to the scrap heap.
  
Mei was the first one I saw after the doctor left. She said she had happen
ed to see the accident and had called my parents while waiting outside the 
sickroom.
  
I must have not overcome the mental shock caused by the sudden accident; 
otherwise, I would not have kept silent. The teacher's criticism must have 
influenced my mind too much; otherwise, I would have thank Mei with all my 
heart. I must have seemed extremely cruel to her at that time.
  
"The doctor said your wound was not so bad. You'll be all right pretty 
soon."
  
I kept silent.
  
"I can't stay but a minute ---- really. But…" With her right hand she 
pushed her hair behind her ears, as she did when it was time to study Science.
  
I was still silent.
  
"But… I know that you didn't do well in the competition, but no one can..."

She must have thought I felt sad because of my low mark and meant to 
comfort me, but I abruptly cut her short.
  
"How nice of you to come here and comfort a loser! You are the teacher's 
good student. I almost forget that. You can always get excellent marks. So, 
it is easy for you to say so. Unfortunately, I don't think I need your cut-
price sympathy."
  
The voice was not loud but the tone was sarcastic enough to deeply hurt a 
pure girl, like Mei.
  
I had expected to hear some furious words from her. If she had done that, 
I might have felt happy at that time. But, she didn't say anything to refute
my impoliteness. Since I had turned my head away, I must have missed seeing
the rolling tears in her eyes. Otherwise, I would have considered myself a 
winner. I still don't know why I have been so impudent that day.
  
"I have to go now. Your parents are coming. Take care. Good-bye." She said
calmly.
  
The door was gently closed. I didn't even say good-bye to her ---- I was 
staring out of the window at that moment.
  
The next day, my teacher and some of my classmates came to the hospital to
see me. The teacher apologized for what he had done. He told me that Mei, 
in fact, got the lowest mark in the competition because of illness.
  
From then on, I had been looking forward to her coming again or my recover-
ing, so that I could say sorry to her personally.
