标 题: Development of Thoughts in English writing

Each culture has its own special way of thinking. The way the English
organize ideas is quite different from the way the Chinese arrange ideas.
So, learners of English must write paragraphs which a native speaker will
understand. Learning to write in English means learning to use these special
ways of arranging and connecting thoughts.
The basic feature of an English paragraph is that is normally follows a
straight line of development from a topic to a conclusion. The paragraph
often begins with a statement of its main idea, followed by a series of
supporting ideas developing the main idea.
The English direct line of development is very different from the
typical
Asian thought development pattern, in which thoughts usually follow a
circular line that does not necessarily lead to a clearly stated conclusion.
These different approaches to arranging ideas in a paragraph are related
to the culturally influenced patterns of thinking of each culture. None of
these styles is necessarily better than an other for expressing ideas.
However,
the direct line of development has become the generally accepted style for
academic, scientific, and technical writing.
