       Ernest Hemingway(1899-1961) was born in a Chicago suburb,Oak Park,
Illinois.In his early childhood, Ernest shared his father's great love of the
outdoors:fishing ,boxing,big-game hunting and bullfighting ,games through whi-
ch men can affirm their manliness. After high school , he took his first job
as a reporter, when he learned the rudiments of his craft.In his own writing,
he cut out all unnecessary words and complex sentence structures, concentrat-
ing on concrete objects and actions, which became the characteristic Hemingway
style as well as most influential style of the twentieth century. Hemingway
was the only writer after Mark Twain  to alter the literary language of the 
country . In 1918 , he was involved in World War 1 and got wounded . Having
seen violence and death up close, Hemingway adopted a moral code exalting
simple survival and the basic values of strength,courage and honesty. 
THE SUN ALSO RISES(1926)was his first and probably his finest novel,depicting
a "lost generation" of postwar American drifters in France and Spain. His 
other books include: A Farewell to Arms (1929), Death in the Afternoon(1932)
, For Whom the Bell Tolls(1940),and the Old Man and the Sea(1952). He 
eventually won the Nobel Prize and is considered one of the greatest American
writers. In 1961,mentally distressed and physically ailing,he shot himself.
