HIPPOPOTAMUS
This ungainly yet impressive African beast has been the subject of human
worship and myth, usually as a goddess, In Ancient Egypt the hippopotamus-g
oddess Tawaret protected pregnant women and women in childbirth: faience ima
ges of her were used as amulets to give protection against demons. The Ronga
of Mozambique tell of a mother who, her child's life threatened by a jealou
s rival, gave her baby to the hippopotamous-goddess for protection. Nightly,
Mother Hippoemerged from the river with the infant for its mother to suckle
, so the boy grew strong and rapidly. Yet male hippopotami could be seen as
shape-shifting monsters. One such, in Msli, ate all the rice in the fields u
ntil the hero Fara Maka decided to destroy it. He threw all his spears, but
the blades melted as they struck it hot body. The hunter Karadigi sent his 1
20 horse-sized black hounds against it, but it ate them all. Fara Maka went
home to sleep with his wife Nana Miriam, who next day put a spell on the bea
st, so paralyzing and defeating it.
