France considers that the anti-terrorist measures Pakistani President genera
l Perez Musharraf had promised to take were important and positive, said the
 French Foreign Ministry in a statement issued Sunday.
Musharraf promised on Saturday to crack down Islamic extremists and pledged 
that his country would not be used as a base for terrorism.
These measures will "contribute to the resumption of dialogue which is indis
pensable between Pakistan and India," said the ministry in the statement, re
ferring to recent tension over the disputes of sovereignty of Kashmir betwee
n the two countries.
"We had invited the Pakistani authorities to pursue firmly with their action
 against terrorism. The determination expressed by President Musharraf and t
he measures taken against numerous terrorists are important and positive," s
aid the statement.
In his speech on Saturday, Musharraf also said that the peaceful resolution 
of the Kashmir dispute is a joint responsibility of both Pakistan and India.

He declared that five Islamic groups, accused of promoting terrorism and sec
tarianism in the country, have been banned by the government and any organiz
ation or individual would face strict punishment if found inciting people to
 violence in internal or external context.
