U.S. warplanes on Sunday launched their first daytime air attacks on a suspe
cted al-Qaeda base at Zawar, some 30 kilometers southwest of Khost Province,
 according to the Peshawar-based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP).
Quoting witnesses in the Pakistani border town of Miran Shah, the AIP said a
t least five waves of severe bombings had been launched by the U.S. air forc
e.
No immediate report on casualties is available so far, it said.
Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda fighters were believed to have recently regrouped
 in the Zawar area, which houses cave complexes and training facilities for 
fighters dating back to Afghanistan's anti-Soviet war in the 1980s.
The private news agency said U.S. ground troops might be able to send patrol
s into the caves at Zawar in a day or two to search for Taliban or al-Qaeda 
remnants.
It said U.S. aircraft have been bombing the area for several days and some U
.S. ground troops have been in the area since last week.
