U.S. President George W. Bush expressed his concerns about unemployment on T
uesday, urging Congress to set aside party politics and push through his fre
e trade and tax cut agenda which he says is a cure to unemployment.
"I'm worried about jobs and I believe if you trade more, there are more jobs
available for hard-working Americans," Bush said at the Port of New Orleans
as he wrapped up his two-day trip to three heartland states, Illinois, Miss
ouri and Louisiana.
"Trade is a jobs issue, and the United States Senate needs to hear the voice
s of the working people and get me a bill I can sign," Bush told workers in
a speech.
He called on the Democrat-controlled Senate to pass trade promotion authorit
y, which would give him the power to negotiate trade agreements that Congres
s could approve or reject but not amend. The bill was approved by the Republ
ican-led House of Representatives in December 2001, but the Senate is yet to
vote on the issue early this year.
Many Democrats and labor and conservation groups oppose the so-called "fast-
track" authority, fearing it would threaten American jobs.
The nation's unemployment rate hit a six-year high of 5.8 percent in Decembe
r and many economists say the jobless rate will continue to climb to around
6.5 percent this summer.
Bush used his trip to the American heartland to push for expanded trade and
passage of his economic stimulus package, which Democrats have bottled up in
the Senate.
Bush has renewed his focus on the economy at the start of this election year
, even as he manages the war against terror and as his administration is def
ending its contacts with Enron Corp. before the huge energy company collapse
d last month.
