With rich scientific personnel resources and a good investment environment, 
the national capital Beijing has caught the attention of an increasing numbe
r of foreign research and development (R&D) institutions.
Last year, a total of 55 items of technologies developed by foreign R&D orga
ns were sold on the Beijing technical market, with the transaction value rea
ching 2.659 billion yuan (320 million U.S.dollars) or 13.92 percent of the c
ity's total and 4.92 percentage points higher than last year's figure, said 
Lin Geng, director of the Beijing Technical Exchange Market.
The total business volume of the local technical market hit a record 19.1 bi
llion yuan (2.3 billion U.S. dollars) in 2001, an increase of 36 percent on 
a yearly basis.
According to statistics, the combined transaction volume of technologies inv
olving electronics information, bio-engineering and new medicine, electromec
hanical integration, new materials, environmental protection and comprehensi
ve utilization of resources reached 10.839 billion yuan (1.3 billion U.S. do
llars), up by 32 percent.
The year 2001 witnessed the export of 8.73 billion yuan-worth of technologie
s from the Beijing market, a rise of more than 30 percent.
Lin Geng said that more foreign R&D organs are expected to come to Beijing f
ollowing China's official entry into the World Trade Organization.
