Chinese researchers have made a hand, as deft as human's, for the robot to c
onduct complicated operations in space.
China is studying the key technologies of space robots, which will shoulder 
the lunar exploration mission before Chinese astronauts set foot on the moon
, according to a leading space robot researcher.
State Aerospace Bureau confirmed that China will explore the moon and will a
ctively participate in the international exploration of Mars after the reali
zation of manned spaceship aviation.
"With the deft hand, the robot may replace astronaut to conduct some difficu
lt and dangerous operations outside the space capsule," said its developer L
iu Hong, a professor with the Harbin Polytechnical University in northeast C
hina's Heilongjiang Province.
The robot hand, as large as a human's hand, has four fingers, and each finge
r has four joints on it. It is equipped with 96 multifunctional sense organs
, 12 drivers and a computer.
Under the remote control of researcher, the robot hand can pull object weigh
ing 10 kilograms on earth and can use spanner, screwdriver and other tools.
"It can even play piano," said Liu, adding that the deft robot hand also has
 wide use on earth. It can detect and remove landmines, conduct operations i
n nuclear, biological and chemical environment, provide services in families
 and can also been grafted on the handicapped.
China's first space robot research center has been set up in Beijing.
"Breakthroughs have been made in many key technologies of space robots," sai
d Liang Bin, deputy director of the research center, "If it is required by C
hina's space plan, the space robot will be sent to space very soon."
Sun Zengqi, the leading expert from Qinghua University, is studying teleoper
ation of the space robots through virtual reality technology to solve the bi
g time delay caused by long distances.
Sun said that the space robot used for lunar surface exploration will be sma
ll and dexterous, can easily move, climb slopes, evade obstacles and be easi
ly accustomed to the inclement environment on the moon.
China will also focus on developing robots used in space capsules, said Sun.
 Although China is currently not capable of building large space stations, i
t is possible for China to build small-sized space labs. When the space labs
 are unmanned, robots will be used to handle lab experiments.
This type of space robot has various senses and deft hands and can detect an
d repair the malfunctions, Sun said.
Countries including the United States, Japan and Russia have developed space
 robots. The gap between China and the countries in space robot technology h
as been greatly narrowed, said Sun.
