A Canadian biotechnology company in the province of Quebec has found a way t
o artifically produce spider silk, one of the toughest biological fibres on
earth, it is reported Friday.
The method involves transplanting spider protein genes into cow and hamsters
cells in laboratory dishes.
Nexia Biotechnologies Inc. worked with the U.S. Army Soldier Biological Chem
ical Command to get the mammal cells to produce the silk, and then found a w
ay to "spin" it, artificially.
"Spinning here means extrusion," said Nexia president and CEO Jeffrey Turner
.
"The proteins align, nucleate and spontaneously form crystals. It is mind-bl
owing to see this thing happen ... this stuff self assembles," he said.
The fibre produced is very similar to real spider silk, but not as strong. T
he product is called Bio-Steel and there is hope it will have a range of use
s -- from surgical thread to soft body armour.
"Spider silk is the Holy Grail of material science. The spider, this simple l
ittle organism, has been able to dwarf man's achievements in the textiles ar
ea -- by far," said Turner.
"It turns out that a number of people have really tried to do this and faile
d. This is an extremely complex problem. We're not finished with it yet, but
at least we understand enough about the complexity to be able to harness it
and use it effectively for a business model," said Turner.
The goal is to produce the silk in large enough quantities to make it commer
cially usable. To do this, genetically-engineered goats will be employed. Th
e spider gene will be inserted into the goats with the purpose of producing
the spider protein in large quantities in their milk.
