Canada's Nortel Networks lost 27.3 billion U.S dollars in 2001, including 1.
83 billion U.S. dollars in the most recent quarter, the Canadian high-tech g
iant reported Thursday.
But after a year of massive job cuts and stock losses, the company said it e
xpects to begin turning a profit late in 2002.
But the company warned that it would continue to suffer through the current
first quarter, with revenues expected to fall 10 percent below the three mon
ths ending December 31.
"For the year 2002, we expect a gradual growth in revenues beginning in the
second quarter," Nortel chief executive Frank Dunn said in a statement relea
sed after stock markets closed.
"With respect to our bottom line performance, we expect an ongoing steady im
provement from our fourth quarter 2001 performance and to return to profitab
ility in the fourth quarter of 2002.''
Nortel has suffered massive losses and plunging revenues in the wake of the
global telecom meltdown that battered the company's major telephone industry
customers in the last 18 months. The company lost hundreds of billions of d
ollars in stock value in 2001 and cut its workforce of more than 96,000 by n
early half to stop the flood of red ink.
After a spate of expensive acquisitions fuelled by sky-high share prices, No
rtel was forced to write off billions of dollars on its books, producing one
of the biggest annual corporate losses in history.
