Singapore's PSA Group, the government-linked company in charge of the Island
's ports, announced here Friday that it handled a total of 19 million Twenty
-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) of containers in Singapore and around the world
 for the year ending December 31, 2001, dipping by 3.2 percent in throughput
 compared to the previous year.
In 2001, PSA's Singapore terminals handled 15.52 million TEUs, a decrease of
 8.9 percent over 2000, while its overseas container terminals saw solid gro
wth of 32.8 percent over 2000, reaching a throughput of 3.6 million TEUs, PS
A said.
PSA blamed the last year's decline in its total throughput on significant sl
owdown in the global economy, caused by the collapse of the technology bubbl
es, the worldwide rundown of inventory and reduced consumption, and the terr
orist attacks in New York and Washington.
"The New Year 2002 has got off to a flying start with good growth. We hope t
his rebound will be sustained and will spread to other industries in the com
ing months," the PSA said
