Lebanon's gross foreign currency reserves lost about 1.1 billion dollars by
mid-January, from 5.93 billion dollars at the beginning of the year down to
4.83 billion dollars, according to the country's Central Bank.
The official NNA news agency Saturday partly attributed the loss to the inte
rference of the Central Bank in exchanging market to keep the stability of t
he Lebanese pound.
The fixed rate of 1507.5 pounds to one U.S. dollar has stayed for more than
two years.
Debt servicing consumed another chunk of reserves.
Lebanon's 26 billion dollars of public debt rose to over 165 percent of the
country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2001, one of the highest in the wo
rld.
Debt servicing accounts for 43 percent (or nearly 3 billion dollars) of the
6.6 billion dollars budget of this year. It has limited the government's abi
lity to control the budget deficit from month to month.
The International Monetary Fund has warned Beirut that its public debt is al
ready at an alarming level, adding that the government must speed up privati
zation and administrative reforms as soon as possible.
Despite the losses, Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri still holds a posit
ive view about the country's economy. He announced on Friday that the econom
ic growth rate in 2001 was up from zero a year before to 1.5 percent. Most o
f the economic indicators are showing improvement and there is an increase i
n trade and tourism. "We witnessed a rise in economic activity in general in
2001," the government chief concluded.
