U.S. to Ship Tons of Wheat, Rice to Iraq
Friday March 21, 2003 12:20 AM
WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States is sending 200,000 tons of wheat and ric
e to Iraq, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said Thursday.
``President Bush has assured the people of Iraq that they will have the food
and medicine they need,'' she said.
The first wheat and rice shipment will go next week, and more will be sent o
ver the next several weeks. The government has another 400,000 tons ready to
be shipped if needed, she said.
The donation comes from an emergency reserve, the Bill Emerson Humanitarian
Trust, which the government taps for unanticipated food crises.
The U.S. Agency for International Development is in charge of distributing t
he food. It already is sending water, blankets, shelters, and medical kits t
o the Iraqis.
``Today's distribution will go a long way to ensuring there is minimal disru
ption to the Iraqi food distribution system,'' said Andrew S. Natsios, admin
istrator for U.S. AID.
