Key Developments Concerning Iraq

Key recent developments in the war:
-British forces battled more than 1,000 die-hard Iraqi loyalists for control
of Basra amid reports of an uprising against Saddam Hussein's forces in the
country's second-largest city.
- U.S. Army forces killed up to 500 Iraqi troops in a fierce, running battle
after coming under attack near the central Iraqi city of An Najaf. The Pent
agon reported no U.S. casualties in the battle, although two U.S. tanks were
hit and damaged.
- The first sizable relief convoy for Iraq set out from Kuwait in a biting s
andstorm as allied forces struggled to clear the way for more aid shipments.
- Using missiles and warplanes, allied forces struck Iraqi state-run televis
ion early Wednesday. The station's international satellite signal was knocke
d off the air, but regular broadcast resumed on schedule after daybreak.
- President Bush was to pay a visit Wednesday to the Florida headquarters of
Central Command, whose top general, Tommy Franks, is running the war agains
t Iraq from a forward headquarters in the Persian Gulf.
- A second serviceman died from wounds suffered in a grenade attack in Kuwai
t blamed on an Army sergeant, the military said. Air Force Maj. Gregory Ston
e, 40, based in Boise, Idaho was pronounced dead at an Army field hospital.
- U.S. officials reported signs of renewed control by Baghdad of military an
d security forces around Iraq, but said they don't know whether that leaders
hip is provided by Saddam Hussein or by his senior chiefs.
-Former President Clinton said Americans should support President Bush and U
.S. troops in the war.
-Thousands of protesters in Sydney, Australia, pelted police with bottles an
d chairs grabbed from street-side cafes Wednesday in Australia's most violen
t demonstration yet against the Iraq war. In South Korea, demonstrators were
arrested when they tried to barge into the U.S. Embassy.
