The US Congress has approved nearly 80 billion US dollars to finance initia
l costs of the war on Iraq, foreign aid to key allies, struggling airlines a
nd anti-terrorism efforts.
The US Congress has voted overwhelmingly in favour of allocating nearly 80 b
illion US dollars to finance initial costs of the war on Iraq, foreign aid t
o key allies, struggling airlines and anti-terrorism efforts.
The votes by the Senate and the House of Representatives put the two chamber
s on track to send Bush a final package by his deadline of April 11, which w
ould be uncommonly swift for a Congress that received his request for nearly
75 billion dollars only a week ago.
Besides domestic security funds, both bills contained more than 62 billion d
ollars for the Pentagon and roughly 8 billion dollars respectively for aid t
o countries supporting U.S. efforts overseas. Included was money for replaci
ng satellite-guided munitions, setting up a tribunal to try Iraqi President
Saddam Hussein for alleged war crimes and letting state and local agencies b
olster security at home.
