AS the US-led coalition forces hurled bombs and missiles at Iraq, there were
discussions on the war on universities campuses across China.
Students expressed opposition to the US-led war, describing it as illegal. A
nd they called for peace in the Gulf region soon.
"Any action without UN backing is not a proper way to solve the Iraq issue,"
said one Peking University student. "Disputes should be solved by political
means instead of the use of military force."
At Tsinghua University, Luo Yang was more concerned about the economic conse
quences.
"The Gulf War and 10 years of sanctions have pulled Iraq's economy back to t
he level of 20 years ago. It is doomed to disintegrate in this disastrous wa
r. Also war will exacerbate the global economic situation and cause huge los
ses to the world's economy," he said.
At Shanghai's Fudan University, student Wei Chun said the war on Iraq could
result in a number of serious retaliatory actions. "It's going to generate m
ore hate in the region," she said.
In Xi'an, concerned students on March 22 crowded into Xi'an Jiaotong Univers
ity to attend a lecture on "Focusing on Iraq" by Li Xiuzhen, a Middle East e
xpert. Li spoke about the history, causes, and effects of the war to give st
udents a clearer picture of the situation.
Students said they were concerned about the Iraqi people and their plight. "
I wish the war would end soon so that the Iraqi people suffer less. I will p
ray for them," said student Li Minghui.
