US Marines in Iraq have state-of-the-art equipment to warn them of chemical
or biological attack — a pigeon.
Dozens of birds were given to Marine regiments before the war — causing som
e laughter — but also underlining how seriously the US military is about ga
s attack worries.
Pigeons are more sensitive to nerve and chemical agents than humans. The US
military thinks pigeons may prove to be difference between life and death.
"I've got sensors that cost US$12,000 and birds that cost US$60 each and I p
lace just as much trust in the bird as the sensor. Anything mechanical can f
ail or give us wrong readings," one US soldier said.
Pigeons have a long history of helping man in war. In Greek and Roman times,
and in World Wars I and II, they carried messages for people.
This time, their role will be different. The birds could detect toxic gases
should an industrial plant be hit.
