While meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Paris, French Prime M
inister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said Russia and France will forge a strategic p
artnership in a bid to prevent a war in Iraq which might possibly threaten t
he Middle East region and international stability.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer says despite opposition by France, Germa
ny and Russia, President George W. Bush still hopes the UN Security Council 
will support a new resolution authorizing military action against Iraq.
Meanwhile, the BBC released a latest poll indicating the majority of British
 people oppose their country joining a unilateral US war against Iraq. Less 
than one tenth insist Britain can join a US launched war if the UN refuses t
o authorize war against Iraq.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell criticised France, Belgium and Germany fo
r using NATO as a political tool and advocating their stance of opposing a q
uick war against Iraq.
Turkey's Foreign Minister Yashar Yakish and Minister of State for Economic A
ffairs Ali Babacan have left for Washington to hold consultations with the U
nited States on details of a possible war in Iraq and a US economic aid plan
 for the country.
