Putin made the remark Wednesday in Bordeaux at the end of his three-day visi
t to France. He gave his support to France in resisting U.S. pressure for wa
r in Iraq.
He says if it becomes necessary, Russia will use its power of veto, noting t
hat war is the last resort, and at the present time there is no necessity fo
r war in Iraq.
In a related development, British Prime Minister Tony Blair says Iraq's poss
ession of missiles with ranges in excess of U.N. limits could represent a "s
ignificant breach" of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
Iraq has denied this however, saying they are within the limit set by the UN
.
