Airports, hospitals across the world on high alert
First suspected cases surface in Europe
Airports and hospitals around the world were on alert yesterday for carriers
of a severe type of pneumonia that has killed nine people, infected more th
an 100 and is being spread across the globe by air travellers.
South Korea has become the latest country to warn its citizens against trave
lling unnecessarily to mainland China, Hong Kong and Vietnam. Singapore and
Taiwan issued travel warnings on Friday.
Some passengers arriving at Hong Kong's airport were seen wearing masks and
bus companies told drivers to cover their noses and mouths as a precaution.
Some nervous travellers have begun to cancel tours to Vietnam and Hong Kong,
where tourism has been one of the few bright spots for the economy.
The World Health Organisation issued a rare emergency travel advisory about
the highly contagious Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, saying it was now a
``global health threat''.
The illness is a typical pneumonia that begins with high fever, chills, coug
h and breathing difficulties, and can deteriorate rapidly into pneumonia. So
me experts believe it is caused by a new virus.
In Vietnam, three new cases were reported, bringing the total to 46. Some fe
arful residents rushed to pharmacies to snap up medical supplies and surgica
l masks. In Canada at least four people have been infected and two have died
.
Hong Kong Health Minister Yeoh Eng-kiong said on Sunday some patients had re
sponded well to a combination of anti-viral drugs and steroids.
Chinese journalists say they have been told not to report on pneumonia cases
, but diplomatic sources say people are aware of the outbreak, despite the n
ews blackout. Airports and some airlines in Vietnam, Australia and New Zeala
nd ordered staff yesterday not to check in passengers with symptoms of the d
isease.
The ability of the disease to spread quickly across the world was highlighte
d at the weekend when a Singapore doctor displayed symptoms and had to be ta
ken off a plane in Frankfurt. The doctor had earlier treated patients with t
he disease in Singapore.
In Hong Kong, representatives of the tourist industry promised to change air
filters frequently in tour buses and assured travellers that the territory
was safe. Travel agents have reported a huge slump of up to 50% in bookings
from places such as Singapore, where 20 victims are battling the virus. Thre
e of them were in Hong Kong recently.
The number of Hong Kong people infected with the severe and contagious strai
n of pneumonia had nearly doubled, officials said yesterday. ``The numbers a
re very alarming,'' Mr Yeoh told reporters.
The first suspected cases of the mysterious pneumonia-like illness have surf
aced in Europe, health officials in several countries reported yesterday.
A patient has been admitted to a British hospital suspected of having the my
sterious form of pneumonia, England's top medical official said yesterday.
``We are watching this outbreak extremely closely,'' Chief Medical Officer f
or England Professor Liam Donaldson told the BBC.
