Deaths from the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) reached 55 on China
's mainland by April 9, according to a press release from China's Ministry o
f Health Thursday.
The regional distribution of reported SARS cases and resultant deaths is as
follows: Guangdong, 1,213 cases, 44 deaths; Shanxi, 32 cases, 2 deaths; Beij
ing, 22 cases, 4 deaths; Guangxi, 12 cases,3 deaths; Hunan, 6 cases, 1 death
; Sichuan, 4 cases, 1 death; Shanghai, 1 case.
The number of reported severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) cases totale
d 1,290 on China's mainland by April 9, the press release said.
The ministry reported that 1,025 out of 1,290 SARS patients, or 79.4 percent
, have recovered and been discharged from hospital on China's mainland.
The SARS patients that have recovered include: 1004 in Guangdong, 4 in Shanx
i, 1 in Beijing, 8 in Guangxi, 5 in Hunan, and 3 in Sichuan.
The SARS figures provided by the Ministry of Health include confirmed and su
spected cases, Qi Xiaoqiu, director of the Disease Control Department of Hea
lth Ministry said, adding that the ministry categorized SARS cases into thre
e groups, namely confirmed cases, suspected cases and cases demanding furthe
r observation.
Statistics given to the World Health Organization as well as the public incl
ude confirmed and suspected cases, he said, noting such figures might change
due to changes in diagnosis of suspectedcases.
In south China's Hunan Province, the figure fell by two cases for this reaso
n, he said.
The Ministry of Health expanded medical observation over people who had been
in contact with SARS patients so as to enhance prevention, he said, adding
such people had not been counted.
