Australians step up efforts to keep SARS out of door
Australians stepped up Wednesday efforts to prevent Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) from spreading into their country.
According to the Australian Associated Press (AAP), the New South Wales stat
e government has officially listed SARS as a category four medical condition
under the Public Health Act.
The listing brings the measures available in line with other diseases such a
s tuberculosis and typhoid. It means authorities can compel persons suspecte
d of having SARS to undertake medical testing and treatment, and place them
in quarantine. Non-compliance penalties include up to six months jail or up
to 5,500 Australian dollars (3,410 US dollars) in fines.
The Western Australia took the same step Wednesday. From Thursday SARS will
be classified as a dangerous, infectious disease in the state. The classific
ation gives health authorities wide-ranging powers to deal with suspected SA
RS cases. These include isolating people suspected of having the potentially
life threatening disease and those who have come in contact with them and o
rdering the testing of people suspected of having SARS.
However, Queensland expressed worry saying hospitals in the state could face
problems if there was a large outbreak of fatal SARS virus. State Health Mi
nister Wendy Edmond said Qeuensland's largest hospitals would be the first t
o be used in the event of an outbreak. Incoming aircrews in the state were w
orking with quarantine inspectors to identify possible patients who were the
n screened and monitored.
The Northern Territory government Wednesday canceled next month's eight-day
international Arafura Games. It otherwise would be one of the Asia-Pacific r
egion's most high-profile sporting events and attract thousands of athletes
from more than 25 countries and pump more than 5 million Australian dollars
(3.1 million US dollars) into the local economy.
Australian Airlines Wednesday announced it will cut back direct services bet
ween Asia and the tourist city of Cairns. The Cairns-Taipei route will be su
spended from May 7 to June 30 while Cairns-Hong Kong flights cut from three
to one a week until May 27.
No SARS case has been confirmed in the country so far with four remaining un
der investigation.
