Chinese Newspaper Closing Concerns U.S.
Saturday March 15, 2003 11:20 AM
BEIJING (AP) - Protesting what it called backsliding on media freedom in Chi
na, the U.S. Embassy on Saturday urged authorities to reopen a pioneering ne
wspaper shut down after publishing an article discussing political reform.
The closure of the 21st Century World Herald, published in the southern city
of Guangzhou, was a ``particular disappointment'' in light of a mild relaxa
tion of restrictions on the press, the embassy said.
``Freedom of expression is an internationally recognized right. We call on t
he Guangzhou authorities to respect that right and to allow the paper reopen
immediately,'' the embassy statement said.
Chinese authorities haven't commented on the closure of the paper. It was be
lieved to have been ordered shut by officials of the ruling Communist Party'
s propaganda department, which keeps a tight leash on all Chinese media.
The move was apparently prompted by the weekly newspaper's publication of an
interview with Li Rui, a former secretary to communist China's founder Mao
Zedong in its March 3 edition. Li criticized Mao and single-party rule and c
alled for free elections and other Western-style political reforms.
In the year since its founding, the Herald had gained a reputation for livel
y, aggressive reporting amid China's stodgy, entirely state-controlled press
. Its publisher, the Southern Daily News Group, has been criticized by commu
nist authorities for articles in its publications challenging government vie
ws.
Last month, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell complained of judicial abus
es and a deterioration in human rights following the arrests of government c
ritics.
