U.S. Helicopter Downed South of Baghdad
Tuesday March 25, 2003 8:40 AM
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Army's first battle with Iraq's elite Republican Guard
provided a look at what may lie ahead in the battle for Baghdad: swarms of
rifle-firing Iraqis in civilian clothes and many destroyed Iraqi tanks.
Army Apache helicopters engaged in fierce clashes south of the capital city
Monday with Iraqi forces believed to be part of the Republican Guard's Medin
a Division. The Apaches knocked out about 10 Iraqi tanks before withdrawing,
military officials said. One helicopter went down and its two crewmen were
captured, but officials said it was not known if the cause was hostile fire
or unrelated mechanical failure.
The Pentagon listed as prisoners of war Chief Warrant Officer Ronald D. Youn
g Jr., 26, of Lithia Springs, Ga., and Chief Warrant Officer David S. Willia
ms, 30, of Orlando, Fla.
U.S. officials on Monday repeated warnings that they believed Iraq was more
likely to use chemical or biological weapons against coalition troops the cl
oser they get to Baghdad.
The Iraqi Republican Guard controls the bulk of Iraq's chemical weaponry, mo
st of which can be fired from artillery or short-range rocket launchers, acc
ording to U.S. officials who discussed the intelligence information on the c
ondition they not be identified. These weapons generally can hit targets fro
m a few dozen miles or less.
Maj. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the vice chief of operations on the Pentagon's
Joint Staff, recounted the Apache attack during a briefing for reporters Mo
nday but did not mention heavy resistance from the Iraqis.
With the Medina Division also coming under attack from Air Force and Navy pl
anes, the conditions are being set to weaken that force and create an openin
g to attack it directly on the ground, McChrystal said. ``All of the pieces
are falling in place,'' he said.
McChrystal said U.S. ground troops had not yet engaged Republican Guard unit
s in direct combat, other than the attacks by Apaches. He said the helicopte
r attacks followed military doctrine - combining deep strikes with psycholog
ical operations and, soon, artillery fire - to weaken the Medina division be
fore the Army's 3rd Infantry Division hits it full force.
Pentagon officials, meanwhile, complained bitterly Monday about what they ca
lled ``deadly deceptions'' by Iraqi troops pretending to surrender to U.S. f
orces and then firing on the Americans.
``They are sending forces out carrying white surrender flags or dressing the
m as liberated civilians to draw coalition forces into ambushes,'' said Vict
oria Clarke, spokeswoman for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld. ``Both of
these actions are among the most serious violations of the laws of war.''
McChrystal said U.S. forces would continue to accept Iraqi surrenders.
In two episodes Sunday near An Nasiriyah, Iraqi forces deceived Americans in
to believing they were surrendering or otherwise welcoming them, then attack
ed, U.S. officials said. Nine Marines died in one of the incidents, official
s said.
Heavy fighting continued Monday in An Nasiriyah, which is important because
of its bridges across the Euphrates River that could be used by advancing tr
oops. Cobra attack helicopter pilots returning from strikes on An Nasiriyah
on Monday said Iraqis in civilian clothes as well as in uniform had been fir
ing at their aircraft with small arms.
