Various new laws on life and property insurance, as well as new rules on motor
 vehicle insurance, have taken effect from the first day of 2003. The moves ar
e expected to largely benefit insurance companies.

    They are also aimed at enhancing the regulation of insurance agencies and 
increasing the reputation of the country's insurance industry.

    The new law allows property insurance companies to sell accident insurance
 policies. This is expected to enhance competition in the short－term life ins
urance market. Some companies say they will be actively involved in this secto
r, introducing products such as an accident aviation insurance policy.

    Insurance companies will also be given more leeway in drawing up insurance
 rates and be allowed to develop distinctive products.

    Reinsurance will also be significantly affected by the new law. The set re
insurance rate will be decreased five percent year－on－year from the current 
20 percent.

    Motor vehicle insurance is already market－oriented. The new regulation wi
ll further allow companies to determine relevant insurance rates according to 
risk of vehicle damage and drivers' safety records.

    China plans to reform accident aviation insurance products at the beginnin
g of 2003. Policies will be sold online and customers can ask for refunds or c
hanges depending on flights.
