Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue says China supports suggestions whi
ch might help resolve the Iraqi issue peacefully.
She says the UN should continue to play a dominant role in bringing the prob
lem to an end.
“If the two UN organizations require more time to conduct a deeper investig
ation, we think the UN member countries should respect their requests.”
The spokeswoman also points out that the recent actions taken by Iraq as wel
l as their statement are positive signs that Iraq will further cooperate wit
h the UN and resolve the problem through political means.
Also on Tuesday, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and his French counterpart Ja
cques Chirac discussed the joint statement on the Iraqi crisis issued by Fra
nce, Germany and Russia during a telephone conversation.
Jiang Zemin says China supports the content of the statement, and stresses t
he need for a peaceful resolution to the Iraqi issue within the UN framework
.
He adds that the UN weapons inspections have so far been effective, and shou
ld continue.
Jiang Zemin says that war is beneficial to neither side, and that it is Chin
a's duty to take all possible measures to avoid a war.
