High medicine and medical care prices have been a major concern in China in
recent years. There are two major reasons for this problem. First, the purch
ase of medicines is not done collectively, and often leads to corruption. Se
condly, China’s hospitals force patients to buy medicines from their own dr
ugstores, as selling medicines at inflated prices has long been a source of
revenue for them. These factors have greatly increased the financial burden
faced by patients.
The Chinese government has put in place a series of measures to tackle this
problem, namely the setting of limits on medicine prices, the introduction o
f public bidding for medicine purchase, and since 1998, inspections into the
pricing of medicines.
Li Lei from the State Development Planning Commission speaks highly of the m
easures.
“This work is aimed at better regulating the medicine markets and pushing f
orward reform of the medical system. Prices set by pharmacies, hospitals and
drugstores will come under strict supervision. This can effectively cut cos
ts for patients.”
According to Li Lei, the government will continue its efforts this year to k
eep medicine and medical care prices at a reasonable level. One of the focus
es of this year’s work is to eradicate corruption and misconduct in medicin
e purchase.
