Since AIDS was discovered in the early 1980s, over 20 million people through
out the world have died of the disease. Experts estimate that over one milli
on people have been infected with HIV/AIDS across China.
Minister of Health, Zhang Wenkang, says that although China has made a lot o
f progress, including increasing the amount of money allocated to the fight 
against the disease, and providing better training for heath workers’, much
 still needs to be done. He says international cooperation is vital.
“The prevention and cure of AIDS in China needs cooperation and assistance 
from the whole world. We are eager to exchange experience and research resul
ts in combating the virus in the future.”
Over 100 international projects have been launched so far in China to help w
ith the work. In the largest project, about 100 scientists from United State
s and China are developing an AIDS vaccine as well as medical treatments for
 the disease. The United States funded the project 15 million US dollars. Sh
ao Yiming is the chief scientist on the project.
