Japan's Defense Department says it plans to use its state-of-the-art Aegis d
estroyers and advanced radar systems to monitor North Korean missile activit
ies.

It also plans to launch two satellites next month to monitor possible missil
e launch activity in the areas surrounding North Korea.
Japan says it began laying the groundwork for the comprehensive surveillance
 plan after North Korea test-fired a Taepodong-1 missile over Japan in 1998.
