The death toll has risen to 96 following a fire in a nightclub in the tiny e
astern US state of Rhode Island.
The fire erupted when fireworks were let off in a hall during a rock concert
 in the town of West Warwick, igniting the roof and sending onlookers fleein
g for the exit.
Nearly 200 more were injured in the stampede for the exit, 35 critically. Wi
thin three minutes the hall was fully ablaze, and firefighters, reacting qui
ckly to an emergency call, arrived on the scene of the blaze to find a charr
ed shell of a building.
It was the deadliest U.S. nightclub fire since 165 people were killed at the
 Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky in 1977. It also came less
 than a week after 21 people were killed in a stampede at a Chicago nightspo
t.
