Defending champion Fabrice Santoro dropped the first set before recovering t
o defeat Austria's Stefan Koubek 6-7 6-2 6-0 in the first round of the Dubai
 Open on Monday.
The unseeded Frenchman raced into an early lead but the erratic Koubek recov
ered and then swept through the tiebreak for the loss of just one point to t
ake the opening set.
In the second, Santoro broke to love to lead 3-2, and then took advantage of
 a rain break to re-think his game plan.
When play resumed it was one-way traffic as Koubek either went for winners a
t the wrong time or was simply careless, and Santoro didn't drop another gam
e.
"I started pretty well," said Santoro. "I went 2-0 up and had a chance for a
 second break, but I thought the set was over already and he played a good t
iebreak.
"But the rain break came at a good point for me. I had time to think about m
y strategy, and when I came back on the court I was more focused."
Third seed Jiri Novak from the Czech Republic was made to work by Slovakia's
 Dominik Hrbaty before advancing 6-1 3-6 6-3.
Qualifier Maximillian Abel from Germany was presented with a probable second
 round clash with top seed Roger Federer when Ivo Heuberger retired after ju
st one game with a lower back injury. Another qualifier, Vadim Kutsenko, was
 beaten 7-5 6-2 by Spain's Feliciano Lopez.
