Roman Polanski became a surprise frontrunner for next month's Oscars by winn
ing best film and best director with The Pianist at Britain's Bafta annual f
ilm awards on Sunday.
But Polanski, who fled to France in 1978 as he was about to be sentenced for
 having sex with a minor, still faces arrest the moment he steps foot in the
 United States.
His harrowing portrayal of the story of a Polish Jewish pianist who escapes 
the Warsaw ghetto in World War Two has echoes of his own story as a holocaus
t survivor, and has been seen as his magnum opus.
Nicole Kidman was named best actress for her role as tormented author Virgin
ia Woolf in "The Hours". Daniel Day-Lewis was named best actor for his chill
ing portrayal of a 19th century gangster in Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New 
York".
Stars strutted, fans shrieked and the red carpet was rolled out for Hollywoo
d's finest as they arrived at for the ceremony in London's West End.
The British cemeony has come to rival the Oscars for glitz since last year, 
when it was moved to just before the Academy Awards, to cash in on Oscar hyp
e -- and give fans a preview.
The more so this year: the nominees put up by the British Academy of Film an
d Television Arts for best film and best actor were identical to those battl
ing for the Oscars. All the main winners are also nominated for Oscars.
Several stars chose the opportunity to speak out against war in Iraq. "We ha
ve to stop this army of darkness" said Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, wh
ose "Talk To Her" won for best original screenplay and best foreign language
 film.
