ANTI-WAR COMMENTS
Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal announced an award by saying: "Last week mi
llions of people voted against war in Iraq and we still don't have any answe
r. But also, last week 10 people voted for best cinematography, and we have
the results."
But there was also plenty of fun and old fashioned glamour.
Welsh-born Catherine Zeta-Jones, named best supporting actress for her role
in "Chicago", turned up very pregnant and dazzling in a black dress with a p
lunging neckline, accessorised by a ruby-studded necklace -- and husband Mic
hael Douglas.
Would the awards excitement send her into early labour?
"Well you never know, will they have to wheel me on a gurney tonight, or at
the Oscars? This guy has to do some breathing lessons, I tell you," she said
, tugging on Douglas's sleeve as she entered the theatre.
When she accepted her award from Scorsese, she said: "Oh my gosh! I'm very h
ormonal so please forgive anything I say, and if I cry, Marty please take me
off the stage!"
Christopher Walken won the best supporting actor award for his role as the d
own-on-his-luck father of Leonardo DiCaprio's character in "Catch Me If You
Can".
The awards-show razzmatazz is still something new to London.
"When I first came to the Baftas we were in a little cinema in Piccadilly. T
here were 12 people, maybe someone from the BBC and that was it. That was th
e lot," said Sir Michael Caine, nominated on both sides of the Atlantic for
his role as a cynical, lovesick journalist in Vietnam in "The Quiet American
".
"Look at it now. This is like the walk-up to the Oscars now -- the red carpe
t! Of course the red carpet's over there and we're here on grey pavement...v
ery British," he said as he prepared to enter the awards ceremony.
Hollywood still reigns supreme even for the British film industry. The only
British picture nominated for best film was "The Hours" -- two thirds of whi
ch is set in New York and Los Angeles.
