A threaten to people and the environment
SPORTS Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are designed for getting "off the beaten trac
k" to areas ordinary vehicles cannot reach. However, only a small per cent o
f SUV owners actually take their vehicle off-road. So why get them?
SUVs have a reputation as a great family car. Ads show families packing the
SUV with bags and heading out for the day, with Mum and Dad in front smiling
looking back at the two children and the pet dog. They are seen as a safe a
nd practical vehicle.
A 2001 survey by Polk, a US keeper of automobile records, showed that SUVs a
ccount for one out of every four vehicle sales in America. But, on suburban
streets, they are not such a good thing.
The very design that allows this machine to drive over rocks, through mud an
d across rivers, can cause extensive damage to anything that gets in its way
.
SUVs have become the deadliest vehicles on US roads, as well as in many othe
r Western countries. They are larger, heavier and stronger than cars and are
actually classified as "light trucks" even though they are passenger vehicl
es.
The US Department of Transportation's Fatality Analysis Report in November 2
002, found 51 per cent of motor vehicle deaths in 2001 were car occupants. O
nly 24 per cent died in larger passenger vehicles such as utility vehicles a
nd vans.
The statistics may give the impression that SUVs are safer than cars. This i
s not the case.
SUVs may offer more protection in a multi-vehicle accident, but statistics f
or single vehicle accident deaths are alarmingly high. Of the total number o
f passengers that died in an SUV in 2001, 64 per cent died in an accident th
at did not involve another vehicle.
Part of the explanation is that SUVs have a higher centre of gravity and are
prone to roll over when turning. These types of accidents are likely to cau
se fatalities or serious head injuries.
But, human fatalities are not the only problem. One of man's favourite tools
for enjoying nature is also one of the environments worst enemies.
Because SUVs are considered light trucks, they do not have to follow the sam
e guidelines as other passenger vehicles. They have very low fuel economy an
d release high amounts of carbon dioxide.
Some manufacturers have made an attempt to improve fuel efficiency, but Ford
has said that it would not be able to make the 2005 deadline it set for its
elf in 2000 to reduce fuel consumption.
