A very common way to start a conversation is to talk about the weather.

It is sometimes difficult to get change without buying something, so 
it's a good idea to carry change with you at all times. If you need 
change, you can buy something inexpensive like candy or a newspaper 
and ask for the coins you need.

 十三、Making a Telephone Call(1) 
The telephone system in the United States, as in many other countries, 
has a special number for each region of the country. It is called an 
"area code". If you know the area code and the phone number, it's 
usually cheaper to dial the number yourself. Of course, you must go 
through [通过] an operator to make person-to-person or collect calls. 
You can dial direct to many countries overseas or you can ask for the 
overseas operator. 

打电话：和其他许多国家一样，美国的电话系统规定每个地区都有一个专门的号码

 十五、Asking for Directions 
People are usually helpful when you ask for directions. You should try 
to have the exact address and be as specific[明确的;确切的]as possible.
 Telephone directions are the most common source of addresses. 
Remember that many cities and some towns are built in "blocks". People 
will often tell you, for example, to "go two blocks and turn right." 

问路:你要问路的话,人们通常是会乐意相告的。你要尽量掌握确切的地址,而且越
具体越好。电话号码薄是最常用的查找地址的资料。须知,有许多城市和一些城镇

 lawyer. You should call as far in advance [预先；提前］ as possible.

In cities, buses have letters or numbers indicating［标示；指示］their 
routes. Usually the exact fare is required because you can't get 
change on a bus. Long-distance travel by bus is common throughout［遍及
...；到处］the United States and Canada. It is an inexpensive, scenic 
way to travel. Special tickets for unlimited［无限的］ travel are 
sometimes offered by the larger bus companies.

 十八、Taking a Taxi
Taxi fares vary［（彼此）相异；存在不同之处］from city to city. In 
some cities, taxis have meters that tell you the fare. For long fides, 
it is a good idea to ask in advance［预先；事先］what the approximate 
fare will be. This is especially true if you're taking a taxi from an 
airport. You should tip taxi drivers about 15% of the total fare.

乘出租汽车：各大城市出租汽车的车费不尽相同。有些城市，出租汽车上装着能向

 十九、At a Railroad Station
Long-distance travel by train is not as common in the United States as 
it is in many other parts of the world. Most train travel is in the 
"Northeast Corridor" linking Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore 
and Washington, D.C. Special express trains called "Metroliners" 
travel between New York and Washington, D.C. All seats on these trains 
are reserved［预定］in both coach (2nd class) and club car (1st class).
 Long-distance trains also serve major cities such as Atlanta, Miami, 
New Orleans, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Sleeping 
compartments［分隔间；列车车厢］are available on most long-distance 
trains and must be reserved in advance. Most trains are operated［经管；
管理或掌握（某事物）］by AMTRAK, the national railroad corporation.

 二十、The New York City Subway 
There are subway systems in several cities in the U.S. New York City has
 an extensive［大规模的；广阔的］and rather complicated［复杂的］
rapidtransit［运输；运送］system. Each train is designated by a letter 
or a number, but most New Yorkers refer to them by such names as the 
Broadway Local and the 6th Avenue Express［（火车的）快车］. It is 
important to remember that both local and express trains operate on some
 lines. You must have a token or, in some cases, the exact change to get
 on the platforms. Subway maps are available at most token booths.

You can go to a travel agency［经办处；代理行］. or talk directly to the
 airline to make air travel arrangements［协商］. Remember that some 
cities have more than one airport. Be sure you know which airport and

 二十二、Renting a Car
It is possible to use a foreign license when driving in the United 
States, but it is a good idea to have an international driver's license
［许可证；执照］.If you do not have an internationally recognized［承认
某人或某物有效或属实；认可］credit card, a large deposit is usually 
required to rent a car. Each state has its own driving regulations, so 
pay close attention to［密切关注某事物］road signs.

 二十三、At a Gas Station
When you buy gas, you should tell the attendant whether you want 
unleaded, regular or premium gas. You can either ask for a specific 
amount, such as ten dollars's worth, or you can ask the attendant to 
"fill it up". If the attendant fills it up, he or she will then tell you
 how much it come to［共计为某数；等于某数］.

在加油站：买汽油时，你应该告诉加油站的服务员，你是要不含铅的汽油、普通汽
油、还是高级汽油。你可以要一定数量，比方说１０元钱的汽油，也可以要求服务
员加满油箱。如果是让服务员加满油箱，事后他（她）会告诉你一共要付多少钱。
