The Pakistan air force (PAF) is expected to spend up to $150m by next year bui
lding 10 prototypes of the JF-17 "Thunder" fighter aircraft, developed in co-o
peration with the Chinese, senior government officials said yesterday.

The first test flight of the aircraft was scheduled to take place in China thi
s week, said Air Vice-Marshal Shahid Lateef.

The JF-17 has not yet been assessed by independent analysts, but Pakistan air
force officials claim it is comparable to the US F-16 fighter.

Pakistan has been trying for more than a decade to purchase new fighter aircra
ft to form the backbone of its air force. In 1990 the US suspended the sale of
F-16s to the country on the grounds that it was preparing to make nuclear wea
pons. Pakistan carried out its first nuclear test in 1998. Countries approache
d by the PAF for new aircraft include Sweden, France and South Africa.

The fast rise in Pakistan's foreign currency reserves in the past 18 months, w
hich at more than $11bn (€10bn, £7bn) are enough to finance up to
a year's imports, has enabled the country to push ahead with the acquisition o
f fighter aircraft.

"The issue is no more Pakistan's capacity to make payments. There could be upf
ront payment for a new deal," said a senior Pakistani official. "The issue is
finding a credible supplier."

While President Pervez Musharraf has emerged as a key US ally in the fight aga
inst terrorism, the general's requests to the Bush administration to allow the
resumption of F-16 sales have so far been turned down.

China remains Pakistan's main defence supplier.

，瑞典法国和南非曾与巴基斯坦接触表示愿意提供战斗机。
巴基斯坦的外汇储备在过去的18个月内快速增长，(目前以超过110亿美元)足以支撑一年的
军备进口。这也使巴基斯坦能够将其战机的购买计划付诸实施。
“问题已经不是巴基斯坦有没有能力支付，巴基斯坦可以对任何一笔新的\交易支付现金”
巴基斯坦的一位高级官员说道：“关键是能够找到一个可信赖的供应来源”
