标 题: You don’t have to wait till Thanksgiving to give

Recently, there have been several articles by fellow members of this board exp
ressing feelings of depression
due to personal tragedies and the angst of having to face with uncertain f
utures. The following is based on a very short essay I wrote in another BBS a
little over 2 years ago. Not too long before that my favourite brother-in-law
died of cancer-- only 3 years after my sister had died. He was only 50 years o
ld. Less than a week later, a newly acquired sister-in-law committed suicide.S
he was only 48 years old. That came on the heels of news reaching me that thre
e of my classmates, one from elementary school, one from high school and the ot
her from graduate school, (all of whom had not yet reached 60) , had also pass
ed away.
This was originally written in November, 2000, a few
days before the American Thanksgiving. The following
is a revised version.
-----
As the year draws rapidly to a close and the American Thanskgiving right
at the doorstep, let us stop for a moment and take stock of our lives.
If you are living in an island of tranquility amidst an ocean of tumoil ﹐
in good health with no life threatening ailments ﹔ if you are free from pres
ecutions, real or imaginary; if you have a warm place to sleep in , hot food i
n your tummy , not having to worry about where the next meal is coming from an
d how to feed your children; then take a look at the sea of suffering, depriva
tion, depression, hopelessness, crippling pain, terminal illness, unresolvable
internal conflict and manaic depression , that surrounds you. Open your heart
and feel the agony of people, who, haunted by past ghosts and potential futur
e demons, see no way out but suicide; the torment of people who are trapped in
deformed minds and/or bodies; and the anguish of people dying at the prime of
their lives from painful terminal illnesses. Pause for a moment and give than
ks to either fate or the god of your choice and say to yourself: “But for the
grace of god (or good fortune, fate...), there go I.“
Life does not have to be a cup that runneth over. It does not even have t
o be full, or even half full. So even if your cup is only a quarter filled, do
n’t think of it as
almost empty, but think of it as still having something left to drink from
. And even if what is left is only water, savour it slowly and appreciatively
and it will taste sweeter than the sweetest of all wines.
How many more Novembers,
I know not..
Nor do I wish to know.
Each day is a new day,
Fill with things of wonder
Waiting for me to see and enjoy.
