Every year, Japanese minsters cause a political storm in Sino-Japan diplomatic
ties by visiting the Yasukuni shrine. (靖国神社) We know that the Yasukuni sh
rine honours Japan’s 2.5 million war dead, including wartime Prime Minister H
ideki Tojo, who was hanged for war crimes in 1948, as an A-class war criminal.
Just several days ago, four Japanese ministers marked the 58th anniversary
of the country’s surrender at the end of World War II with a visit to this c
ontroversial war shrine. Japanese Trade Minister, Agriculture Minister and the
notorious Tokyo’s nationalist governor, Shintaro Ishihara were among those v
isitors.
Although Japanese Prime Minister, who sparked outraged from his Asian nei
ghbours with past visits to the shrine, did not attend this time, Instead he m
arked the end of the war at secular ceremonies. He has visited Yasukuni every
year since taking office in April 2001, but has always avoided the sensitive 1
5 August anniversary.
Our media, Remin Ribao (People’s Daily), notes that before and after 15 A
ugust every year is always a troublesome time for Sino-Japanese relations. We
have known the reacts of public and our gorvernemnt. To this year the event se
ems more significent because the coming 6-way meeting about North Korean nucle
ar installation, which may need Sino-Japan cooperation.
According to BBC News, the Japanese press are divided over the visit. An e
conomic daily fears the damage that it might do to relations with China, belie
ving it to be the “principal obstacle“ to improving the atmosphere between B
eijing and Tokyo. The paper calls on both sides to make “mutual concessions“
to resolve the issue. [Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei)].
Anothe view was reflected in the Asahi Shimbun. This paper expresses that
“At such a memorial, visitors would not have to worry about the religious and
ideological connotations of visits to the Yasukuni Shrine,“ . It also noted
that whether visits or not to the shrine had beed regarded as “a hot potato k
nowing it could kindle an unwanted internal feud before the party presidential
election in September.“ It calls on China to stop criticising Japan over the
Yasukuni visits. Finally, it shouted: “Foreign countries should not meddle i
n the internal affairs of another country. They should not do so even if Yasuk
uni shrine honours Class-A war criminals.“
Asahi Shimbun’s voice may represent parts of Japanese thoughts, and it be
comes to be prevailing in Japan. Then my question would be asked, Does our Chi
nese public or goverment have right to criticise, blame or even contemnd the J
apanese goverment? If we cannot give ourselves enough reasons to refute those
self-centred and extreme nationalism. They would be more CRAZY. THIS WOULD LEA
D TO A RESULT THAT WE CHINESE CANNOT EXPECT.
